New Zealand One Way Rentals!
NEW ZEALAND INTER-ISLAND ONE WAYS
Located just across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand is a favourite destination for Australian travellers. A rental car is one of the most convenient and popular methods for exploring New Zealand, and one way trips between the North and South islands is a common request.
While a one way rental between the two islands, for example picking up in Christchurch and dropping off in Auckland (or vice versa) can usually be arranged free of charge, there are a few rules and procedures that need to be followed when making the request.
DURATION
Most suppliers require that you spend a minimum amount of time on each side of the Cook Straight to be eligible for the free one way rental. This is usually three days minimum on both North and South islands, although it can vary, so be sure to check this at time of booking.
CROSSING THE COOK STRAIGHT
While there is no fee for inter island one ways, suppliers have some rules regarding the crossing itself.
Firstly, a rental car cannot be taken across from one island to the other. Staff from depots will instead meet you on one side and collect your rental car, with staff on the other side of straight providing you with another rental when you arrive on the ferry.
It is for this reason, that for suppliers to confirm one way rental between the island, a specific date and time needs to be given for the ferry crossing, so staff on both sides of the straight can be ready. It is always best to book your car hire and ferry tickets at the same time, to ensure you have matching dates and times.
One way rentals in New Zealand are a great way to see both Islands. Suppliers often have relocation specials also, which are reduced rates if you are travelling in a specific direction.
